Let Nothing Stop You – Jumoke Adenowo

Olajumoke Adenowo’s story is not exactly the regular one. It’s not the poverty-to-riches story. However, this does not take away its uniqueness.

Olajumoke Adenowo was born on the 16th of October, 1968 in Ibadan, Oyo State. She grew up at Obafemi Awolowo University with her professor’s parents. Her father was a history professor and her mother, was a criminology professor.

She attended the University of Ibadan Staff Primary School and Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Oyo. At 14, she enrolled in Obafemi Awolowo University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science, with Honours in Architecture at the age of 19. As an undergraduate, she won the prize for Best Student Design. She obtained her Master of Science in Architecture, with distinction, from the same university in 1991.

After graduating from university, Adenowo was hired as an Assistant Architect at Towry Coker Associates. She then practiced as an architect in Lagos at Femi Majekodunmi Associates. She worked on the Federal Ministry of Finance project in Abuja at the age of 23.

Adenowo founded her own architecture and interior design firm in 1994, AD Consulting when she was 25 years old. Since its inception, AD Consulting has been involved in the design and construction of more than 70 projects. These include Nigerian government buildings, private residences, healthcare facilities, industrial campuses, and corporate and financial institutions. AD’s clients include Coca-Cola and L’Oréal.

Olujumoke is happily married to Olukorede Adenowo and they are blessed with two sons, Toluwalase and Toluwaloju.

We can learn from Olajumoke’s story. Though young, she was focused. Starting a career at a young age and in a field mostly dominated by men, she must have had her own fair share of challenges. However, that didn’t stop her.

She’s a wife, a mother, and a prominent woman in her career. She represents a good work-life balance.

So many people like Olajumoke were born with a silver spoon but we can’t even remember them by that.

Today, Olajumoke is not remembered just because of that silver spoon but the golden one she made for herself.

Olajumoke Adenowo is one of the richest architects in Nigeria, popularly known as the Starchitect (i.e. Star Architect). She is a speaker, author, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. She is a successful architect (featured by the world’s foremost Architectural Journal, Architectural Record) and a force in her profession, an industry dominated by men.
