Outspoken, talented, and dauntless. Those are the words that come to mind and define Asisat Oshoala, Nigeria’s women under-20 football champion. The young lady has the weight of Nigeria’s women football on her shoulders and her ever-growing collection of record-breaking wins shows she is in a league of her own.
The Super Falcon striker has had some legendary accomplishments. She is one of the youngest players ever to win the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Women’s player of the year for the fourth time in a row. The 25-year-old has also racked up the astonishing Adidas Golden boot and Golden ball title for being the most irresistible performer at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. And just when you thought she was going to take a breather, she bagged a contract with Spanish Club FC Barcelona that will see her play for the club till 2022.
It is rare to find a woman with such prowess and tenacity, making waves in a male-dominated industry and that is one of the reasons why we love her. But hold onto your hats, these fun pointers we dug up about her will make you love her even more.
- She knows what she wants and is not afraid to go for it…
Being born into a lower-middle-class family is one thing; trying to make a name for yourself without your family’s support or blessings is another. As a young girl with a burning passion to play football, Asisat would often play on the streets with other boys and in typical African parent fashion, she was met with disapproval, and sometimes she was made to forgo food as a consequence of that disapproval. At age 15, she dropped out of school to pursue football professionally. In an interview with ESPN FC, she admitted to leaving home in pursuit of her dream when the opportunity to play in a professional team in another city came knocking on her door. It is safe to say that played out well in the end. Although it was a risky move, she has proven that sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone to chase your dreams, ignoring every form of naysayers can amount to success after all.
- She loves her job
Blow the whistle and you will see the Nigerian striker sway her way around the field. In another interview with FIFA, she narrated how passionate she is about leading the team to victory. According to her, playing on the pitch is like having fun. Despite the pressure mounted on her to score goals, for Asisat, it is just another day at the office. For her, football is everything even if it means watching matches on TV during her free time in Barcelona. Well, we can’t argue with that, because her list of titles and awards speaks of her undying passion for the game. Another lesson which we can learn from her; focus on what you love doing, find a place where you can channel your passion, and be good at it.
- She is a woman and she embraces it.
In a world that promotes stereotypes, being a sportswoman automatically translates to tomboys amongst other misconceptions. For a fierce woman like Asisat, she is always breaking free from such stereotypical boxes. To her, fashion is about putting on what you’re comfortable in, and for that, we get to see the black beauty in mini-skirts, shorts, and gowns. She embraces her feminity and we love that – even if it means getting sultry with pictures and words on social media pages like her confessing to wanting just sex rather than a relationship.
For Asisat Oshoala, her journey is just starting as she is relentlessly working to create her own history. While she continues to raise the bar and make her country proud, we are cheering her on to victory.
